Humphrey Pownall of Morley (1496 – September 1574) was the 16th great-grandfather of Cometan, classified as one of Cometan’s distant paternal ancestors in the Taylor family line. Born in Morley, Cheshire, Humphrey was the son of the poet, lawyer and landowner Humphrey Newton de Pownall (1466 – 1536), and Elena Fitton (???? – 1536). He is referred to as Humphrey Pownall of Morley in Cometanic ancestry in order to distinguish him from his father.
He is recorded as having married a lady named Elene Fitton (1510 – 1560) whose similar name to that of Humphrey’s mother has raised question as to whether he married one of his cousins from the Fitton family, however, this theory has yet to be verified. Humphrey is known to have fathered at least one child named Ralph who was born in 1536 (the same year as both of his own parents’ deaths). The only other known fact of Humphrey’s life was that he died at the age of seventy-eight in Wilmslow in the Cheshire East Unitary Authority.
In Cometanic ancestry, Humphrey is categorised as part of the 18th generation retrograde, classifying him as a distant ancestor of Cometan.
