Cultural elements

Astronism in Suriname refers to the presence of the Astronist philosophy and religion in the Republic of Suriname. The operations of the Astronist Institution in this country are under jurisdiction of the Astronist Superiate of Suriname, a national subsidiary of the worldwide Astronist Institution.

The Astronist Superiate of Suriname oversees the construction and maintenance of observatories and planetariums throughout its jurisdiction. Suriname is split into ten administrative districts and is set to hold one Grand Observatory in the capital city of Paramaribo, which will also be the only Astronist observatory in the republic.

This national branch of the Astronist Institution manages the official representation and depiction of Astronism throughout this territory, including efforts to protect the identity of the philosophy with the intention of further disseminating it throughout the territory.

It is the Institution alone that is granted the status of proprietor to the philosophy in this territory as any other organisations or institutions proclaiming such a role are deemed as unauthorised proprietors and are therefore considered as part of the anti-Institutionist movement.

History of Astronism in Suriname[]

As of December 2020, Astronism is not recognised as a valid religion or religious group in the country of Suriname. According to the Astronist Institution's late 2020 report called the Demographics of Astronism, Suriname had a population of 190 Astronists, up from 120 Astronists in 2019.

Despite their unrecognised status, Astronists enjoy relative religious liberties in the country and can practice and profess their faith openly and publicly without fear of repression or incident. Therefore, the Astronist Institution has not expressed concerns regarding the religious freedoms for Astronists in this country.

A significant barrier to the further spread of Astronism in the country is the lack of accurate translations of Astronist materials in the dominant language of the nation. As of late 2020, the Omnidoxy had not been translated into the most widely spoken language of Suriname which is Dutch. This remains a significant issue for Astronists there.
