In Cometanic theory on freedom of religion or belief, affirmation refers to when a government endorses one belief system over all others, typically as the state religion or oppositely as state atheism. Essentially, affirmation is whenever a country asserts rather than merely acknowledges the tenets of a belief system which in turn distinguishes affirmation from recognition.

In practical terms, state affirmation of a belief system results in the government directing funds towards the institutions representing the belief system, a government's promotion of the doctrines of the belief systems, and in most cases, subjugation of all other belief system existent in the country.
